Obsidian weapons aren’t worth it in my opinion. Obsidian tools on the other hand I feel are worth it, however a lot of what you harvest depends on your level of survival more then the tool when you get to the higher tier equipment. Between star metal and obsidian I would suggest using what you have easier access to.

Yeah, it gets a little more yield but for durability go with starmetal, IMHO. Star metal = 22 yield v. 24 for obsidian. Or go Acheronian, 24 yield and high durability. I honestly don't get why anything besides Acheronian exists on high levels.. It will rarely give goldstone and I mean rarely but there is an assload of obsidian to mine. You'll be tossing out thousands of obsidian just to get the gold you need. Make sure you have a good smelter thrall to reduce the amount needed to make a goldbar so you can grind it into 10 dust. I believe the T4 smelters will turn 3 goldstone into 1 bar.
Just mine obsidian in the North for TONS of gold... and mine silver in the west. Trust me it's WAY more efficient. I found a great gold farming location.
