I replaced the stamped dear head birch stocks (which I still have) with some new Walnut checkered stocks I got off of ebay! Now it looks like a 336sc (sporting carbine). A 1X-4X will be effective at greater distances than the .35 Remington is practical for a shot at game. At the low end, you can find the game animal at 15yds to 20yds in thick cover. At 4X, if you know the drop, you can easily place the shot, (or at least the crosshairs), out to 300yds. Making the shot is shooter dependent.Brophy's book on Marlin Firearms devotes about 25 pages (outside of appendices) to the model 336 and Glenfield 30. It is an outstanding reference on everything Marlin up until the late 1980s. It covers your models completely, and is available on ebay, Amazon, etc for ~$70; worth every penny!Like Richard said, the 30aw is basically a 336 with different furniture and some exterior hardware.
