Turns out that it wouldn't latch completely, the lever that you have to lift to open the hood was locking normally, but the latch that uses a cable that runs into the cab was too far down to engage.

Don't know exactly what it was that was spilled but it was so sticky that it was preventing the rear hatch from opening.
