John deere 4020 problems.

Tractor. 4020 John Deere. I have a 4020 that ran really well up until November. It starts good , but idles rough and when you put it under load it stalls. If you pull the choke out it will come back to life and run OK. if you feather the choke back in, it will drive around OK in lower gear. Always runs rough and always stalls out under load.Look at the ends of the rocker shaft, are the rubber plugs right against the cotter pins? Had a 4020 that the rubber plugs got hard and moved into the shaft tube and cut off the oil to the shaft. But it does sound like the problem is deeper. Mar 28, 2024. #3. More likely a dirt problem rather than a mechanical problem. Suggest you clean the suction screen, replace the filter and change the hydraulic oil. Idle the tractor for a few minutes and check the hydraulic operations. If the problem persists, then check oil flow and pressures.

Then I bleed the brakes. Now the brakes are totally locked up. The tractor won't move. But if I open the bleed screws, it will move. Total for the rebuild was $700 but was still cheaper than buying a reman brake valve, at least according to the local JD dealer anyway. Good News....the original brake valve was rebuildable.
